I didn’t expect so many people would be interested in this topic, so I decided to publish it early.

First, What Is Açaí?

Açaí is a small, deep-purple fruit that comes from a palm tree in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest. It’s about the size of a grape and has a unique flavor, kind of a mix of berries and chocolate with an earthy twist. This little fruit is definitely a source of pride for Brazil.

Since açaí mostly grows in Brazil, some people call it “Brazilian berry”. But for this article, I’ll stick to calling it açaí (pronounced ah-sigh-EE).

Traditionally, açaí pulp isn’t sweet; it has an earthy, slightly bitter flavor. But in Brazil, people usually add sugar when they eat it. You’ll typically see açaí served as a frozen treat called “açaí na tigela” (açaí in a bowl). It’s made from frozen açaí pulp and sweetened with guaraná syrup. Sometimes, they’ll add banana or other fruits, and it’s topped with granola, sliced bananas, and more fruit. Açaí has become a global health trend thanks to its high levels of antioxidants, fiber, and healthy fats.
